Labour force, Employment and Unemployment for 3rd Quarter 2023

Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 556,100 in the third quarter of 2023 compared to 553,200 in the second quarter of 2023 and 524,800 in the third quarter of 2022.

The unemployment rate for the third quarter of 2023 is estimated at 6.3%, compared to the rate of 6.4% at the second quarter of 2023 and the rate of 7.5% at the third quarter of 2022.

The number of persons considered to be outside the labour force is estimated at 422,100 in the third quarter of 2023 compared to 424,400 in the second quarter of 2023 and 443,300 in the third quarter of 2022.

The main characteristics of the unemployed at the third quarter of 2023 were:

​(i​) ​The 37,200 unemployed comprised 15,800 males (42%) and 21,400 females (58%).
​(ii)​​ ​Around 20,600 (55%) of the unemployed​ were single; males (75%) and females (41%).
​(iii)​ ​Some 20,300 (55%) of the unemployed did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent and among them 3,900 had not even passed the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC)/Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) or equivalent.
​(iv) Around 30,300 (8​1%) had been looking for work for up to one year.
​(v) ​Some 9,200 (25%) were looking for a job for the first time.
​(vi) ​Around 18,200 (49%) were registered at the Employment Information Centre.
​(vii) ​Some 4,100 or 11% of the unemployed were heads of households.
​(viii)​ ​Around 4,200 (11%) lived in households with no employed persons
​(ix)​ ​​​Some 12,400 or about 33% of the unemployed were aged between 16 to 24 years.
​(​x)​ ​​There were 5,100 (14%) young persons aged 16 to 24 years, not yet married and looking for a first job. Some 2,300 possessed a qualification below SC.​
