Education Statistics for 2023

Government expenditure on education and traini​ng for the financial year 2022/2023 was estimated at Rs 20,762 million compared to Rs 18,434 million for 2021/2022, representing 9.6% and 9.7% of total expenditure respectively.

Pre-primary schools numbered 769 in March 2023 with an enrolment of 23,776 children of whom 49.2% were girls. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 4 and 5 years) works out to 91.8% with an average of 14 pupils per teacher.

As at March 2023, there were 325 primary schools with 89,001 pupils of whom 49.3% were girls. The number of persons employed comprised 8,400 persons including 4,474 General Purpose Teachers and 1,166 Oriental Language teachers. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 6 to 11 years) is 111% and the pupil/teacher (general purpose) ratio works out to 16.

As at March 2023, there were 179 schools providing secondary Regular and Extended Education. The secondary school enrolment was 98,900 of whom 51.7% were girls. The number of teachers was 8,992. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 12 to 19 years) works out to 74.4% and the pupil/teacher ratio 11.

The percentage of school candidates meeting PSAC requirement before re-assessment, was 80.6 in 2021/2022. After re-assessment, the percentage stood at 83.1. The pass rate for the SC decreased from 85.7% in 2020/2021 to 78.5% in 2022 and that for the HSC increased from 90.0% to 92.3%.

Tertiary level enrolment increased from 49,497 in 2021 to 50,566 students in 2022.
