[Document] The Combating of Trafficking in Persons (Amendment) Bill

Le Premier Ministre va présenter en première lecture le 14 novembre 2023 le Combating of Trafficking in Persons (Amendment) Bill au parlement.

The object of this Bill is to amend the Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act so as to consolidate the existing legal provisions for combating of trafficking in persons and to provide for a modern legal framework to address the issue of trafficking in persons more effectively.

The amendments to the Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act willallow for a more rigorous identification and prosecution of cases, better supportto victims of trafficking in persons and the establishment of an effectiveinstitutional framework for the fight against trafficking in persons.

To provide for stricter penalties for persons convicted of offences relatingto trafficking in persons, it is being provided that those convicted persons willno longer be eligible for remission or release on parole under the ReformInstitutions Act. In addition, it is being provided that the Court will no longerhave the discretion to inflict a term of imprisonment of less than 3 years for theoffence of trafficking in persons.

The Bill further provides for matters connected, incidental and relatedthereto.
