Indian Ocean Wave 2023 Simulation Exercise

The public is hereby informed that the Mauritius Meteorological Services in collaboration with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre and relevant Ministries and other stakeholders is organising a one-day tsunami simulation exercise on Wednesday 25 October 2023.

The exercise will simulate Indian Ocean countries being put in a tsunami warning situation and require the National Tsunami Warning Centre (NTWC) and the National and/or Local Disaster Management Offices (NDMOs/LDMOs) in each country to implement their Standard Operating Procedures.

The purpose of the IOWAVE 23 exercise is to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (IOTWMS) and test communication links at all levels of the national tsunami warning chain. The exercise will also test the preparedness for responding to tsunamis generated by seismic events.

The exercise will run from 0600hrs to 1800hrs on Wednesday 25 October 2023 and will include simulated evacuation exercise in Mauritius at Quatre Soeurs and Rivière des Galets and in Rodrigues at Graviers, Pointe Coton and St Francois.

The public is requested to cooperate in making this exercise unfold in the best possible conditions and is reminded that this is a simulation exercise and it is not a real situation.

Let us work together to ensure the safety and preparedness of our community.
