The Athletes Welfare Scheme has been established to provide financial assistance to licensed athletes who are encountering challenges and in need of support. This initiative aims to ensure that athletes have the resources to face temporary difficulties.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
The scheme provides financial assistance in the following areas during a sports season:
– refund of medical expenses up to Rs 250,000 for costs incurred locally, in connection with surgery, medication and medical aids/equipment, particularly when such treatments /medical aids/equipment, are not available at public health institutions.
– refund up to Rs 50,000, covering 50% of the costs of the purchase or rental of specific sports equipment necessary for training and competition.
– provision of financial support up to Rs 120,000, distributed in equal monthly instalments, covering a maximum of 50% of the athlete’s monthly salary/revenue for up to six months. This applies in case the athlete experiences a loss of income due to an injury sustained during training or competition that prevents the latter from resuming employment, provided the athlete is not on paid leave.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
To qualify for assistance under the Athletes Welfare Scheme, applicants must:
a. be a licensed member of a National Sports Federation;
b. be aged between 14 and 35 years; and
c. provide proof of training and upcoming competition, endorsed by the National Sports Federation concerned, for a minimum of one sports season.
FUNDING
Funds to the tune of Rs5M has been provided for this financial year.
