[Vidéo news] Launching of the book ‘The Dodo’s Legacy – The Story of Conservation in Mauritius’

The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF) celebrates four decades of conservation with the release of ‘The Dodo’s Legacy – The Story of Conservation in Mauritius’, authored by Rodney Phillips.

Launched amidst the MWF’s 40th-anniversary celebrations at the Institut Français de Maurice (IFM) in Rose-Hill, the book offers a comprehensive account of the island nation’s remarkable journey in environmental preservation. The event drew a distinguished gathering of guests united by their dedication to safeguarding Mauritius’ unique biodiversity.

The publication’s timely release serves as a testament to the significant progress made since the early years of conservation efforts in Mauritius.

The arrival of the Dutch in 1598 marked a turning point, initiating a period of widespread deforestation and the devastating loss of endemic flora and fauna. The extinction of the dodo, now a potent symbol of environmental fragility, epitomizes the catastrophic consequences of unchecked human impact. Subsequent centuries witnessed continued ecological degradation, driven by invasive species, habitat loss, agricultural expansion, and urban development.

It wasn’t until the early 20th century that a concerted effort to address these ecological challenges began, spearheaded by Mauritian and international naturalists. This culminated in the establishment of the MWF in 1984 – a pivotal moment in the island’s conservation history. A small group of dedicated citizens and conservationists formed a non-governmental organization with the ambitious goal of safeguarding threatened species and restoring damaged ecosystems.

‘The Dodo’s Legacy’ unfolds the compelling narrative of the MWF’s four-decade journey, a narrative punctuated by moments of both profound success and considerable adversity. The book meticulously details the unwavering dedication and perseverance that have characterized the organization’s work. It highlights the challenges overcome and the triumphs celebrated, showcasing the global recognition and national pride earned through relentless efforts.

The MWF’s multifaceted approach, encompassing captive breeding programs, hands-on wildlife management, and plant propagation, has yielded extraordinary results. Mauritius has arguably achieved a higher rate of endemic species preservation than any other nation, a testament to the effectiveness of the MWF’s strategies. This fortieth-anniversary publication illuminates the methodologies and achievements that have underpinned this remarkable success.

‘The Dodo’s Legacy – The Story of Conservation in Mauritius’ is available for purchase at the MWF’s Head Office in Vacoas, the boutique on Ile aux Aigrettes, selected bookstores, and at MWF stalls during Christmas markets. The book stands as a compelling account of conservation efforts, a valuable resource for scholars and enthusiasts alike, and a celebration of the significant strides made in preserving Mauritius’ invaluable natural heritage.
