Akilesh Mungar « Mauritius needs a President who is truly “un vrai garant de notre démocratie.”

Le candidat de Linion Reform au No 6 a publié sur sa page Facebook, une réflexion sur le rôle du président de la République de Maurice.

Mauritians are eagerly awaiting the much-anticipated presidential address a moment that should signify hope, vision, and direction. The role of the President is not merely symbolic; it is a critical institution in our democracy. It must embody the spirit of the people, uphold the Constitution, and act as a safeguard for our democratic values.
For over a decade, the presidency was perceived as distant, almost absent. With a new President, we hoped for a fresh start, one that would bring tangible change and address the pressing concerns of the population. However, the early actions of the current President have sparked unease among many.
While the idea of a President as an influencer is not inherently flawed, influence must be wielded with purpose. It should inspire the youth to dream big, encourage innovation, and pave the way for a brighter future for Mauritians. Instead, the focus appears misplaced on inviting foreign retirees to settle here rather than addressing the immediate needs of our people.
The policy of promoting Mauritius as a retirement haven, while lucrative for some, is creating significant challenges for ordinary citizens. Spiraling land prices and skyrocketing accommodation costs are making homeownership a distant dream for many. Housing an essential human need should not be a privilege; it must be a right.

What Should the President Focus On?
The President must be a unifying figure and a champion for change. Here are some priorities that deserve immediate attention:

1. Law and Order
Recent incidents of public outrages and violent altercations highlight a worrying decline in law and order. A sense of insecurity is growing among citizens, who no longer feel protected in public spaces. The President must work with law enforcement agencies to restore discipline, order, and public confidence in the system. We need better-trained, well-equipped, and accountable police officers to ensure safety for all.

2. Combatting Drugs
Drug trafficking continues to devastate communities, affecting youth, families, and social stability. The fight against drugs must go beyond rhetoric—it requires coordinated efforts across law enforcement, education, and rehabilitation programs. The President must advocate for stronger border controls, dismantling drug networks, and providing resources to prevent addiction and support recovery.

3. Fighting Corruption
Corruption has become an endemic problem, stretching from the lowest levels of administration to the highest-ranking officials. The dilapidation of public funds continues to erode public trust in institutions. It is time for a zero-tolerance approach to corruption, with independent oversight bodies empowered to investigate and hold offenders accountable—no matter their rank or position.

4. Tackling the High Cost of Living
Despite promises, the standard of living remains alarmingly high, leaving many families struggling to make ends meet. From food to transportation, basic necessities have become unaffordable for the average citizen. Concrete actions must be taken to regulate prices, increase purchasing power, and ensure that the dignity of every Mauritian household is protected. Empty promises are not enough—people need real solutions that are implemented without delay.

5. Affordable Housing
Introduce legislation to ensure the availability of affordable housing for all Mauritians. Government initiatives should prioritize locals, offering them opportunities to own homes and secure land without the fear of being priced out.

6. Strengthening Democracy
Work towards meaningful constitutional reforms, such as setting fixed election dates, limiting the tenure of the Prime Minister, and ensuring transparent and accountable governance.

7. Youth Empowerment
One of Mauritius’ most pressing challenges is the growing brain drain as young professionals leave the country in search of better opportunities abroad. We need a President and a government committed to reversing this trend by creating a conducive environment for growth and innovation. This includes offering competitive salaries, fostering entrepreneurship, providing robust career development pathways, and investing in industries that can leverage the talent and creativity of our youth. Retaining and empowering our brightest minds is essential to driving the nation forward.

8. Environmental Stewardship
Mauritius faces growing environmental challenges, from coastal erosion to climate change. The President must advocate for sustainable policies that balance development with ecological preservation, safeguarding the island’s beauty and resources for future generations.

9. Protecting Local Interests
Economic policies must prioritize Mauritians first. Whether it is in land ownership, business opportunities, or employment, the government must ensure that foreign investments do not come at the cost of local well-being.

10. A Voice for the Vulnerable
The President must use their platform to amplify the voices of the marginalized and ensure that social justice remains at the forefront of national policies.

11. Food Security
Mauritius’ heavy reliance on food imports leaves the country vulnerable to global disruptions, rising prices, and supply chain crises. A stronger focus on food security is imperative to reduce dependency and build resilience. The government should prioritize boosting local agricultural production, encouraging sustainable farming practices, and providing subsidies to farmers. Investments in modern agricultural technologies, such as hydroponics and vertical farming, can also ensure year-round production. Additionally, empowering small-scale farmers and creating better market access for local produce will not only strengthen the economy but also make basic food items affordable for all Mauritians.

As the presidential address approaches, we, the people, urge the President to rise above ceremonial duties and demonstrate decisive leadership. The presidency should not merely reflect the aspirations of a few but embody the collective dreams of an entire nation.

Mauritius needs a President who is truly “un vrai garant de notre démocratie.” Let this moment be an opportunity to restore faith in the presidency, address the needs of our people, and set a course for a more equitable and prosperous future.

As said, please, let Mauritius be Mauritius again!
