Labour force, Employment and Unemployment for fourth Quarter 2024

The unemployment rate for the fourth quarter of 2024 is estimated at 5.8%

Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 565,300 in the fourth quarter of 2024 compared to 560,700 in the third quarter of 2024 and 559,700 in the fourth quarter of 2023.

The unemployment rate for the fourth quarter of 2024 is estimated at 5.8%, compared to the rate of 5.9%, at the third quarter of 2024 and the rate of 6.1% at the fourth quarter of 2023.

The number of persons considered to be outside the labour force is estimated at 421,100 in the fourth quarter of 2024 compared to 423,400 in the third quarter of 2024 and 419,200 in the fourth quarter of 2023.

The main characteristics of the unemployed at the fourth quarter of 2024 were:
(i) The 34,500 unemployed comprised 14,100 males (41%) and 20,400 females (59%).
(ii) Around 18,500 (54%) of the unemployed were single; males (76%) and females (38%).
(iii) Some 19,500 (57%) of the unemployed did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent and among them 3,600 had not even passed the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC)/Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) or equivalent.
(iv) Around 29,200 (85%) had been looking for work for up to one year.
(v) Some 10,700 (31%) were looking for a job for the first time.
(vi) Around 12,400 (36%) were registered at the Employment Information Centre.
(vii) Some 4,200 or 12% of the unemployed were heads of households.
(viii) Around 4,600 (13%) lived in households with no employed persons.
(ix) Some 11,900 or about 34% of the unemployed were aged between 16 to 24 years.
(x) There were 6,500 (19%) young persons aged 16 to 24 years, not yet married and looking for a first job. Some 3,800 possessed a qualification below SC.

L’emploi des Mauriciens est estimé à 565 300 au quatrième trimestre 2024, contre 560 700 au troisième trimestre 2024 et 559 700 au quatrième trimestre 2023.

Le taux de chômage pour le quatrième trimestre 2024 est estimé à 5,8 %, contre 5,9 % au troisième trimestre 2024 et 6,1 % au quatrième trimestre 2023.

Le nombre de personnes considérées comme étant en dehors de la population active est estimé à 421 100 au quatrième trimestre 2024, contre 423 400 au troisième trimestre 2024 et 419 200 au quatrième trimestre 2023.

Les principales caractéristiques des chômeurs au quatrième trimestre 2024 étaient les suivantes :
