Offences reported to the Police, excluding contraventions, decreased by 20.7% from 72,935 in 2021 to 57,846 in 2022 mainly due to a decrease in offences related to other criminal acts not elsewhere classified (-46.1%) from 46,495 to 25,076 and partly offset by an increase of 20.2% in offences related to acts against property only (burglary and theft) from 14,302 to 17,194.
Road traffic contraventions increased by 1.4%, from 112,454 in 2021 to 113,977 in 2022. It is to be noted that « exceeding speed limit » increased by 42.0% from 41,393 to 58,773.
Some 36,128 persons were suspected, arrested and/or cautioned in the course of criminal investigations in 2022, up by 72.4% from 20,951 in 2021. The number of persons prosecuted rose by 9.3% from 14,556 in 2021 to 15,903 in 2022.
The number of criminal cases lodged in Court increased by 25.6% from 75,038 in 2021 to 94,212 in 2022. During the same period, the number of criminal cases disposed of rose by 21.9% from 64,484 to 78,612.
Out of the 5,016 adult convicts admitted in prison in 2022, some 74.6% were re-offenders who had been imprisoned in the past, regardless of any observation period.CJS_ESI_Yr22_300623
